Rik Van Looy
Nicknamed the “King of the Classics” or “Emperor of Herentals” (because he lived in the small Belgian city near the Dutch border), Rik Van Looy won just about every one-day race worth mentioning. He was the first cyclist to win all five of cycling’s monuments (Paris-Roubaix, Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Tour of Flanders) for a total of eight victories in these races, including three wins in Paris-Roubaix.
Yeah, he pretty much owned it. Read more about him here: http://www.cyclinghalloffame.com/riders/rider_bio.asp?rider_id=45
Strung out in the gutter. I’m sure it hurts like hell. For a few, it doesn’t hurt yet. They are just waiting. When the time is right, when the bunch has thinned, they’ll turn the screws. For now, it’s just wait and watch. Attrition is a bitch.

Why, Marco? Why?
Yep. This is Michele Bartoli’s attack on the Muur. 1996 Tour of Flanders. He blew it apart. Full stop. (I’m sure the top ten that year was just sparkling clean…)

Michele Bartoli awaits the start of the 1996 Tour of Flanders.
He took the top spot that year. And man, did he do it in style. I’ll post the video of his attack on the Muur tomorrow. It is off the hook.

Yesterday’s post brings to mind Cav’s nipping Boonen at the line in the Scheldeprijs…
You know what makes ya feel better after stuffing up the spring like this? Stuffing your face in a dinner plate of coke.
Oh yeah. Until you get popped. Boonen did that. Twice. Swag.

Note to self: Do not put hands up too soon.
Erik Zabel celebrates too soon and loses the 2004 Milan-San Remo to Oscar Frieireirieireireire.
Whoops. File that one under StuffedUpTheSprint.
